Dark and dreary houses can really put a damper on your mood and prevent you from enjoying life and the interior of your home as much as you could. While lamps and other lighting options can help, they are not the same as the light from the sun.
We may be enjoying summer right now and you may think that your home is bright enough, but think back to this past winter. How much sun did you have in your house then? Were you turning on lights in the middle of the afternoon, because you couldn’t see to do something?
Many of us find that we do not have enough sunshine in our homes at certain times of the year. We recommend that you remedy that now, while the weather is warm and the sun is shining down on you. Installing skylights and solar tubes is something that we enjoy here at D&M.
One of our professionals can schedule an appointment to consult with you in your home and show you where you would benefit from some skylights. We can explain how we use solar tubes to pull and direct light to other areas of your home, even if they don’t have direct roof access.
We never recommend taking on the installation of a skylight or solar tube as a DIY project, because this is a more difficult process than cutting a hole in your ceiling and putting in a window. The sun will hit your house in different areas depending on the time of the day or month and you want to place your skylights in areas that will utilize the sunshine the most. And we need to make sure there are no leaks!
Once you have determined where the skylights or solar tubes should be inside your home, the next step is going to be picking out the sizes and types available. We have seen people choose a really small skylight instead of picking one that is large enough for what they need. Plus, a large skylight is not going to cost that much more than a smaller one, because the majority of the cost is in the installation.
Of course, not every room will benefit from a skylight directly on the ceiling, especially if your home is small. There is a solution for that however, and in those instances, we recommend that you install a solar tube. This solar tube, or tubular skylight, would begin as an acrylic dome on your roof and then sunlight travels through a pipe to a fixture in your ceiling that dispenses the sunlight into that room.
There are many options for skylights and while not every type will work for you, we recommend that you find one that will bring the most sunlight into your home. Once you have installed a skylight, we know that you will wonder how you lived so long without it.
