The beginning of a new year means different things for different people, but almost everyone can agree that they want their kitchen to be more organized. It can be tricky to figure out how you can best utilize your kitchen space, but we have come up with a few ideas to help you out and get you started.
Here are 6 organizational tips for your kitchen to start the new year off right:
Clean Out the Refrigerator, Freezer, and Pantry: The first thing that you will need to do when organizing your kitchen is to clean out your refrigerator, freezer, and pantry. Toss out anything that is expired and those things that you know no one is ever going to eat. It is also a good idea to toss anything in the pantry that tastes stale or past its prime.
Clean out the Cabinets and Drawers: This is the perfect time to clear all the clutter out of your cabinets and drawers. We recommend tossing anything that is broken, has missing parts, or is something that you haven’t used in forever.
Find a Designated Space for Papers, Schoolwork, and the Family Calendar: We are not fans of having papers all over the kitchen, but we understand that since this is the hub of most homes, that certain papers need to live in there. Therefore, we are giving you permission to designate a spot for all those papers, schoolwork, and the family calendar. Please keep this area small and make sure that you go through everything once a week to keep it from getting out of control.
Utilize a Lazy Susan: A lazy Susan can help you utilize your corner cabinets better, since you can spin it around to find exactly what you need. Just don’t try to overload this helpful item or you may find yourself knocking everything off as you are trying to find what you are looking for.
Create a Cooking Zone: If you are walking all over your kitchen as you gather pots, pans, and cooking utensils every time you go to make a meal, it is time to make a change. We recommend storing all these items close to your stove and oven. This might mean that you need to switch a few cabinets around, but the time it saves you later will make the extra work you need to do now worthwhile.
Add Drawer Dividers: Keeping things neat and organized in a kitchen drawer is nearly impossible, which is why we always suggest using drawer dividers. These dividers can be helpful in any drawer, but they are extremely helpful in those junk drawers that can easily get out of control.
These six tips can help get you started when you are ready to organize your kitchen in the new year, but they are not the only ones that can be helpful. We recommend taking a good look around your kitchen and then find ways to organize it that will be most helpful for you and your family.
