When homeowners like yourself consider remodeling their kitchen, they often wonder if pushing the wall out just a few feet is a good option. Well, it is, as long as you understand that by doing what is considered a bump-out is actually basically creating a new addition onto your home. You may not be adding that much space to your home, but you still need to make sure that your existing structure, as well as your electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling can handle this small change.
While a bump-out can be a lot of work, the good news is that it is not going to cost as much as it would if you were adding hundreds or thousands of square feet to your home. The bad news is that a bump-out is still going to take almost as much time as a full addition, which means you are going to experience some inconveniences along the way.
The first thing you will need to do for a bump-out is completely remove the exterior wall and then add a beam in that space to carry the load for the new load bearing exterior wall. This should never be too difficult, unless you are expanding the space by more than six to eight feet. It is those larger additions that can create major issues, as well as expenses.
As long as you are choosing a smaller type of bump-out, you should not need to make any changes to the heating and cooling in your home. However, if you are looking at wanting to create a really large kitchen, your contractor may need to hire a heating and cooling professional to see if your current furnace, air conditioner, and ductwork can handle the new space.
Once your old exterior wall is down, the new foundation footings must be put into place before the remaining walls go up. Then all new electrical wires will need to be run, and plumbing fixtures will need to be put into place if necessary. Then it is time for the windows, siding, and shingles to be installed. As soon as all those items are completed, you can finally work on the rest of the inside of your new bumped out kitchen.
A bump-out kitchen always seems like a wonderful idea until people find out that it still takes a lot of work with a high price tag. However, the results are going to turn your kitchen into the space you have always dreamed of, so those little inconveniences will be worthwhile.
