Roof damage comes in all shapes and sizes, which is why it can be difficult to determine what type of damage can be drastically worse than all the others. For example, a missing shingle or two could signify damage, but a small tear in a shingle near a chimney could end up causing more damage in the long term if it is not fixed immediately.
Here are the 6 most common causes of roof damage:
Improper Installation: Any time a roof is not installed properly, there is always an issue sooner than later. That means that if your roof wasn’t installed as it should have been, it will not last as long as it should have.
Flashing Improperly Installed: Flashing is the material that seals the areas around the pipes, chimney, heating and cooling systems, and skylights in your roof. If this material wasn’t installed correctly, there are going to be leaks and the possibility of the shingles falling off.
Small Animals: Small animals like squirrels and even birds can cause a wealth of damage to your roof. Not only can they scratch and make holes in your roof, they can also make their home up there. We always recommend that you have any animals, that have chosen your roof as their new home, removed as quickly as possible. Waiting for even a few days can be the difference between a minor repair and a complete replacement.
Trees and Limbs: Limbs that hang over your roof or rotting trees can cause a lot of damage to your roof if they fall and land on it. We recommend that you trim any tree limbs before they fall onto the roof and even have a tree removed if there is concern that it could topple over in bad weather.
Ventilation: Ventilation is necessary for any roof, which is why we always urge people to have plenty of vents installed. Without enough ventilation, you may have an increase in heat and moisture, which can cause damage to your shingles, rafters, insulation, and much more.
Lack of Maintenance: Maintaining your roof is necessary if you want to minimize the damage, but this can be difficult if you are not sure of what it is that you need to do. We recommend starting by checking to see if all your shingles are in place and that your gutters are clean and free of debris.
These are the six most common causes of roof damage, but that doesn’t mean that there are not other things that can give you problems. If you are unsure about the condition of you roof, give us a call any time and we’ll schedule a time to inspect it for you.
